Dylan is a 31 year old Rocky Bay customer, currently living out of home for the first time, in our Pearsall SDA.
Dylan is enjoying the new experience, making his room his own with West Coast Eagles posters and bonding with his fellow residents over cricket and the AFL.
Divia Claudy, the Team Leader at Pearsall said after many years of following a specific routine at his parents, Dylan is enjoying the flexibility of making his own decisions daily.
“He can do a lot of things for himself here,” Ms Claudy said.
Dylan works 4 days a week and prepares his own lunch to take with him, “ham sandwiches” he explains.
For the first time, Dylan welcomes his close friends into his home, where they all meet before heading to bowling, a weekly Saturday tradition.
Dylan enjoys visits from his family, parents Peter and Jane and niece Emily, especially when they bring “homemade sausage rolls.”
Dylan’s parents said they are seeing him become more independent.
“It’s great his friends visit him now he has his own space; their visits make him happy and feel very special”
Jane
“He is coming out of his shell, becoming more independent and more responsible for things such as personal finances,” Jane said.
Rocky Bay Chief Accommodation Officer Jane Edmond said it was stories like Dylan’s that showcased how living more independently in SDA could positively impact everyday life.
“SDAs, along with support that is empowering and encourages choice and control, enables our customers to experience the independence and freedom we all want when moving out of home, but within a safe and supportive environment,” Ms Edmond said.
With Dylan no longer at home, Peter and Jane are getting used to the new flexibility it brings to their lives.
“I think we might enjoy chilling out a bit more and going for more holidays, we’ve got some catching up to do,” Jane said.
